Applications
Wastewater Disinfection
Wastewater treatment plants are required to disinfect effluent prior to discharge in order to destroy any pathogenic organisms present and minimize public health concerns. Chlorine has been the principle disinfection method in the wastewater industry, despite the fact that disinfection with chlorine produces chlorinated disinfection byproducts including trihabmethanes, that are toxic to aquatic life. In recent years, many municipalities have been required to install dechlorinization systems in order to address disinfection byproducts which result in significant capital outlay and operational complexity.
Peracetic acid (PAA) has been tested by municipalities and provides equivalent disinfection performance for both enterococci and fecal coliform compared to chlorine treated systems. PAA has been found to be less expensive compared to chlorination/dechlorination systems as it is more efficient with lower concentrations compared to chlorine.
Water Cooling
Cooling with water is widely used in industry, power stations and various other applications. Algae and a large number of bacteria species can grow in cooling circuits, producing slime, which leads to clogging problems. This slime can also lead to corrosive bacteria. In certain regions mussel larva entering cooling systems can cause problems in cooling circuits such as clogging of heater exchanger surfaces and screens.
Persan 15 is formulated to be very effective against algae, mussel larvae and slime forming bacteria. It also acts over time to gradually break down long term deposits and organic matter. Application requires limited capital outlay. Decomposition products are biodegradable and no harmful chlorination disinfection byproducts are produced.
Irrigation Line Cleaning
Persan 15 is used as an irrigation line cleaner to combat algae, bacteria and biofilm. The decomposed products are readily biodegradable and chlorinated disinfection byproducts are avoided.
